Credit rating agencies play a critical role in capital markets, guiding the asset allocation of institutional investors as private capital moves freely around the world in search of the best trade-off between risk and return. However, they have also been strongly criticised for failing to spot the Asian crisis in the early 1990s, the Enron, WorldCom and Parmalat collapses in the early 2000s and finally for their ratings of subprime-related structured finance instruments and their role in the current financial crisis. This book is a guide to ratings, the ratings industry and the mechanics and economics of obtaining a rating. It sheds light on the role that the agencies play in the international financial markets. It avoids the sensationalist approach often associated with studies of rating scandals and the financial crisis, and instead provides an objective and critical analysis of the business of ratings. The book will be of practical use to any individual who has to deal with ratings and the ratings industry in their day-to-day job. Reviews "Rating agencies fulfil an important role in the capital markets, but given their power, they are frequently the object of criticism.  Some of it is justified but most of it portrays a lack of understanding of their business.  In their book The Rating Agencies and their Credit Ratings, Herwig and Patricia Langohr provide an excellent economic background to the role of rating agencies and also a thorough understanding of their business and the problems they face.  I recommend this book to all those who have an interest in this somewhat arcane but extremely important area." -Robin Monro-Davies, Former CEO, Fitch Ratings. "At a time of unprecedented public and political scrutiny of the effectiveness and indeed the basic business model of the Credit Rating industry, and heightened concerns regarding the transparency and accountability of the leading agen

An innovative approach to post-crash credit portfolio managementCredit portfolio managers traditionally rely on fundamental research for decisions on issuer selection and sector rotation. Quantitative researchers tend to use more mathematical techniques for pricing models and to quantify credit risk and relative value. The information found here bridges these two approaches. In an intuitive and readable style, this book illustrates how quantitative techniques can help address specific questions facing today`s credit managers and risk analysts. A targeted volume in the area of credit, this reliable resource contains some of the most recent and original research in this field, which addresses among other things important questions raised by the credit crisis of 2008-2009. Divided into two comprehensive parts, Quantitative Credit Portfolio Management offers essential insights into understanding the risks of corporate bonds—spread, liquidity, and Treasury yield curve risk—as well as managing corporate bond portfolios.Presents comprehensive coverage of everything from duration time spread and liquidity cost scores to capturing the credit spread premiumWritten by the number one ranked quantitative research group for four consecutive years by Institutional InvestorProvides practical answers to difficult question, including: What diversification guidelines should you adopt to protect portfolios from issuer-specific risk? "This book is an investigation into the economic policy formulation and practice of neoliberalism in Britain from the 1950s through to the financial crisis and economic downturn that began in 2007-8. It demonstrates that influential economists, such as F.A. Hayek and Milton Friedman, authors at key British think tanks such as the Institute of Economic Affairs and the Centre for Policy Studies, and important political figures of the Thatcher and New Labour governments shared a similar conception of the consumer. For neoliberals, the idea that consumers were weak in the face of businesses and large corporations was almost offensive. Instead, consumers were imagined to be sovereign agents in the economy, whose consumption decisions played a central role in the construction of their human capital and in the enabling of their aspirations. Consumption, just like production, came to be viewed as an enterprising and entrepreneurial activity. Consequently, from the early 1980s until the present day, it was felt necessary that banks should have the freedom to meet the borrowing needs of consumers. Credit rationing would be a thing of the past. Just like businesses, consumers and households could use debt to expand their stock of personal assets. By utilizing the method of French philosopher Michel Foucault this book provides an original analysis of the policy ideas and political speeches of key figures in the New Right, in government and at the Bank of England. And it addresses the key question as to why policy-makers both in Britain and the United States did little or nothing to stem rising consumer and household indebtedness, instead always choosing to see increasing house prices and homeownership as a positive to be encouraged"–

The first decade of the 21st Century has been disastrous for financial institutions, derivatives and risk management. Counterparty credit risk has become the key element of financial risk management, highlighted by the bankruptcy of the investment bank Lehman Brothers and failure of other high profile institutions such as Bear Sterns, AIG, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The sudden realisation of extensive counterparty risks has severely compromised the health of global financial markets. Counterparty risk is now a key problem for all financial institutions. This book explains the emergence of counterparty risk during the recent credit crisis. The quantification of firm-wide credit exposure for trading desks and businesses is discussed alongside risk mitigation methods such as netting and collateral management (margining). Banks and other financial institutions have been recently developing their capabilities for pricing counterparty risk and these elements are considered in detail via a characterisation of credit value adjustment (CVA). The implications of an institution valuing their own default via debt value adjustment (DVA) are also considered at length. Hedging aspects, together with the associated instruments such as credit defaults swaps (CDSs) and contingent CDS (CCDS) are described in full. A key feature of the credit crisis has been the realisation of wrong-way risks illustrated by the failure of monoline insurance companies. Wrong-way counterparty risks are addressed in detail in relation to interest rate, foreign exchange, commodity and, in particular, credit derivative products. Portfolio counterparty risk is covered, together with the regulatory aspects as defined by the Basel II capital requirements. The management of counterparty risk within an institution is also discussed in detail. Finally, the design and benefits of central clearing, a recent development to attempt to control the rapid growth of counterparty risk, is cons

For a credit score in the range of 585-599, you may have to make a down payment of nearly 5% to be approved for a home mortgage loan. Even in this case, your approval will come from a subprime mortgage lender. You have to approach a lender who deals exclusively in loans for people with not so perfect credit or in situations that cause difficulties in getting a mortgage.
If your credit score lies between 600 – 620, you might be easily approved for 100% financing. Even in this case, you have to approach a subprime lender.
For a credit score of at least 620, you can easily avail of 100% financing, along with a reduced rate of only 1 – 2 percentage points more than the prime rate.

Have you seen grey horizontal lines in your vision field?
My wife was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia almost two years ago. Since all of her weird symptoms are associated or caused by this syndrome, she does not want to go to the neurologist. She has a fantastic rheumatologist who believes her and cares for her, but she doesn’t want to go through new neurological evaluations to get negative test results “again”! Yesterday, when she was cleaning the house, she realized that there were two horizontal lines in a form of a “minus” sign (>) passing down her vision field, ” just like movie credits”, she said. This situation last about 5 minutes and she is very scared. Two weeks ago, she couldn’t see the first number in a invoice. She keep telling me that the car dealer made a mistake in the invoice because they only wrote 2,456, instead of 52,456. She kept asking why, until I notice that she was not seeing the number 5. She has been tested twice for MS with negative results. She is 36 years old, and had a whiplash two years ago. Help.
I’m no expert but my hubby had a similar problem with his vision last fall and he was having a TIA (kind of a mini stroke). I definitely think she needs to see a doctor.

Evaluation Roots: A Wider Perspective of Theorists` Views and Influences, Second Edition provides an updated examination of current evaluation theories and traces their evolution. The author shows how theories build upon theories and, therefore, evaluation theories are related to each other. The way in which these evaluation "roots" grew to form a tree helps to provide a better understanding of evaluation theory. In addition to the editor`s overview, which analyzes the evaluation theory tree and connections among theories, the book contains essays by most of the leading evaluation theorists. In these pieces, the evaluators comment on their own development and give their views of their placement upon the tree.

A towering landmark in Civil War literature, long considered one of the great masterpieces of military history — now available in a one-volume abridgment. Lee`s Lieutenants: A Study in Command is the most colorful and popular of Douglas Southall Freeman`s works. A sweeping narrative that presents a multiple biography against the flame-shot background of the American Civil War, it is the story of the great figures of the Army of Northern Virginia who fought under Robert E. Lee. Dr. Freeman describes the early rise and fall of General Beauregard, the developing friction between Jefferson Davis and Joseph E. Johnston, the emergence and failure of a number of military charlatans, and the triumphs of unlikely men at crucial times. He also describes the rise of the legendary "Stonewall" Jackson and traces his progress in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign and into Richmond amid the acclaim of the South. The Confederacy won resounding victories throughout the war, but seldom easily or without tremendous casualties. Death was always on the heels of fame, but the men who survived — among them Jackson, Longstreet, and Ewell — developed as commanders and men. Lee`s Lieutenants follows these men to the costly battle at Gettysburg, through the deepening twilight of the South`s declining military might, and finally to the collapse of Lee`s command and his formal surrender in 1865. To his unparalleled descriptions of men and operations, Dr. Freeman adds an insightful analysis of the lessons learned and their bearing upon the future military development of the nation. Accessible at last in a one-volume edition abridged by noted Civil War historian Stephen W. Sears, Lee`s Lieutenants is essential reading for all Civil War buffs, students of war, and admirers of the historian`s art as practiced at its very highest level.
After the 9-11 tragedy the New York Theatre community was reeling and trying to find a way to respond to the horrific event with equal parts respect and reverence. In Tribeca, located blocks away from Ground Zero, Manhattan Flea Theater's Artistic Director, Jim Simpson, decided to commission a play from his friend Anne Nelson, a Columbia School of Journalism professor, after hearing her true story of meeting with a New York City Fire Captain to help him write eulogies for his fallen fire fighters. Her story became THE GUYS, which has now been adapted and directed by Simpson for the big screen and stars Sigourney Weaver (Simpson's wife) as Joan, a freelance journalist living and working in Manhattan during the days following September 11th. Joan is horrified by the tragedy, but feels like an incapable bystander, until she meets Nick (Anthony LaPaglia) a veteran New York City Fire Captain who must speak at numerous memorial services for his fallen men. Paralyzed by grief, the big-hearted blue-collar hero is incapable of expressing his true feelings until Joan begins to carefully elicit touching stories and anecdotes from him. Joan sensitively responds to Nick's colorful and mournful memories and slowly the very real human lives of his firefighters begin to take the shape of the eulogies he must deliver. Together, the two New Yorkers, affected by September 11th in very different ways, comfort and heal each other in this very personal and moving tribute to the fallen heroes of 9-11.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen – 1.85Full Frame – 1.33Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 – English Dolby Surround – FrenchAdditional Release Material: Theatrical Trailer Product Trailer – 1. I have like $12000 in credit card and $6,000 on car loan. Do i file bankruptcy?
Actually i am a visa holder and work as a clerk in a liquor store and make hardly $1300 a month which is well enough for my rent and other bills and food. I dont see any other way to pay it.
so i am just wondering is it a good idea to file for bankruptcy and does the immigrant status matter in this case and do you have to go to the court with your attorney.
If you are not worried about future credit, you go bankrupt. But your credit will be horrible for (I think 7 years).
You could search online for debt consolidation or lower interest credit cards. Then, you could pay down debt and keep your credit history intact.

In the best economic circumstances, effective credit management can be a challenge for many businesses; in tough times, it can become a critical operational factor that can threaten to make or break an otherwise healthy business. The Business Guide to Credit Management offers new insights into cash management, payment flows, debt collection and asset-based finance, providing practical advice and commentary for those charged with managing, coordinating and protecting their company`s finances.  It examines the credit management cycle from the perspectives of the suppliers, the customers and the banks, explaining the interrelationships between all three groups and offering best-practice models that can help to smooth the financial path, particularly when credit flows appear to be drying up.
In the past decades asset intensive companies have witnessed a number of regulatory changes and especially industry is facing ever increasing competitiveness. To overcome these challenges different asset management methods have been developed aimed to improve the asset life cycle. Especially the design phase and operation and maintenance phase have seen a rise in tools and methods. Smarter design can lead to improved operation. Likewise, improved operation and maintenance leads to lower replacement costs and may provide the basis for better design. This book brings together and coherently presents the current state of the art in asset management research and practice in Europe from a life cycle perspective. Each chapter focuses on specific parts of this life cycle and explains how the methods and techniques described are connected and how they improve the asset life cycle, thus treating this important subject from a unique perspective.

The subprime mortgage loan crisis in the US has developed into a broad credit and credit derivatives crisis lately. In previous years the credit derivatives market experienced growth rates of over 100% per year, outpacing all other derivative segments. This highlights the tremendous demand for credit derivatives, which is likely to remain high despite the current turmoil, but also shows how vulnerable markets have become with respect to this asset class. Consequently, a comprehensive understanding of the risks and mechanisms of the market is essential. Market participants who neglect this necessity face large downside risks, while those who have adequate and efficient risk management processes in place will be rewarded with an attractive risk return profile. This book aims at providing a reference guide to the credit and credit derivatives universe. It covers topics ranging from basic valuation principles for plain-vanilla products to insights into the latest development in sophisticated structured credit products. The authors explain in detail, but always with a hands-on practical perspective, all relevant instruments and quantitative valuation techniques. They show how these instruments can be integrated in a portfolio context and how efficient portfolio management is implemented. Moreover, the authors show how to develop and implement trading and investment strategies in the credit market.
Over the past two decades, financial firms, companies, and governments have shifted greater attention to financial manipulations in which they capitalized on leverage and short-term returns. These actually resulted in an explosive and global growth in financial activity. A financial Pandora`s box had been opened, and countries and blue chip corporations believing in perpetual growth and once thought too big to fail, found themselves strangled with a debt they were not able to bear. The recent market melt-down and credit liquidity crisis created full realization that complex financial products when misunderstood and misused can have devastating effects. Risk Finance and Asset Pricing: Value, Measurements, and Markets is a comprehensive introduction to financial engineering that presents the foundations of asset pricing and risk management, while stressing real-world applications.Written for both beginning and practicing financial engineers, author Charles Tapiero the Topfer Distinguished Professor of Financial Engineering and Technology Management at the NYU Polytechnic Institute provides:A non-quantitative introduction to the business of finance, risk, and their many applicationsAn overview of the statistical approaches for measuring riskAn introduction to the concept of utility and financial risk managementAn outline of the Arrow-Debreu framework in discrete states and time for assets and derivatives (options) pricingAn outline of credit risk, scoring, and complex structured financial products such as credit derivatives, their models, their demystification, pricing, and finally, a cursory view of technical approaches to implied pricingEach chapter includes a summary of the techniques described, and concludes with a series of problems so readers can test what they`ve learned.Financial engineering, despite its challenges and opportunities, when misunderstood, has the potential to wreak havoc on wo

Asset Securitization  is intended for beginners and market professionals alike who are interested in learning about asset securitization—its concepts and practices. It is designed so that the readers will come away with a fundamental but comprehensive understanding of the asset securitization market. As such, the book aims to provide a review of the market’s development, necessary framework, potential benefits, and detailed descriptions of major asset securitization products. Part I of the book, which consists of four chapters, will discuss the fundamental concepts, the funding efficiency, the market participants, and the potential benefits of asset securitization. An analysis of mortgage finance will be provided in Part II, which consists of six chapters that cover a variety of topics from the description of many different types of residential mortgages to the securitization of different types of residential mortgages, including the now infamous sub-prime mortgages. Also included are important topics, such as prepayments, cash flow structure, maturity and credit tranching, and the trading and relative value of the various mortgage-backed securities. The three chapters in Part III will explain the other major asset securitization products, such as commercial mortgage-backed securities, credit card receivable-backed securities, auto loan-backed securities, and collateralized bond obligations. Part IV has two chapters: one reviews the collapse and the potential recovery of the asset securitization market, and the other describes the asset securitization efforts in Japan, Australia, Taiwan, and China.  Extensive tables and charts are presented to help illustrate a concept or describe a product.  Neither analytical discussions nor investment strategies of the various asset-backed securities are included as they are not the focus of this book.
An innovative approach to post-crash credit portfolio managementCredit portfolio managers traditionally rely on fundamental research for decisions on issuer selection and sector rotation. A targeted volume in the area of credit, this reliable resource contains some of the most recent and original research in this field, which addresses among other things important questions raised by the credit crisis of 2008-2009.
