How does the Statute of Limitations for Credit Card debt affect my ability to get a home loan?
Ok… I am 24 years old, in the military, and at 18 made some mistakes with credit cards. I have never paid the debt I owe, and I know that in Texas the Statute of Limitations for this debt is 4 years. I am no longer legally obligated to pay. I also believe its true that 7 years after the original date of delinquency this debt should no longer appear on my credit report. If I am no longer legally obligated to pay the debt, and it is no longer on my credit report will this debt affect my ability to get a mortgage? Also remember that I have a “guaranteed” (meaning the debt is guaranteed, not the loan) home loan as one of my VA benefits. Any thoughts?
The Statute of Limitations (SOL) does not mean you are not legally obligated to pay the debt. The SOL is an affirmative defense if the creditor takes you to court. The creditor can continue to try and collect the debt. They can follow you right to the grave.
Negatives age off your credit report 7 years and 180 days after the first deficiency. The older the debt the less impact on your score. If you wait till this ages off, it will won’t hinder you gettting a mortgage. If you apply for a mortgage before this falls off your report, the mortgage company will insist you pay it off before you are approved.
Best thing for you is to wait the 1-1/2 years for this to age off and put aside money every week toward the downpayment for the house.

I plan on signing up for a Sony credit card to get $100 of my purchase of a PS3, but I’m not sure how I activate it once I get it in the mail, and how to deactivate it? Can I activate/deactivate it online? Will it hurt my credit score to open then close a credit card acct.?
Or once I immediately pay off my credit card, can I just cut it up and wait for it to expire on its own?
I have this card and there is usually a sticker on it with an 800 number that you call to activate the card with an automated phone activation system (this is how most credit cards work).
Should you run into problems, you can usually hit the zero key on your phone one or more times and get an actual customer service person to help you.
On canceling the card, it will show up on your credit report that you opened an account, used it and closed it and any future creditors may see this when they request your report. It shouldn’t effect their giving you another card but you shouldn’t repeat this practice of opening an account, using it and closing it right away.
If you keep up with the payments in a timely manner, then you will be establishing the beginnings of good credit history that you may need down the line to take out a loan, buy a car or buy a home. If you cancel the card, that good credit history will be erased and you’ll have to start all over again.
Conversely if you don’t keep up with the payments, you will establish bad credit history and that is not erased by canceling the card.
It’s better to use the card, pay it off and put it away somewhere safe or if you know you’re definitely not going to use it, just cut it up. They’ll send a new card after the expiration date of the first one anyway so if you then decide you want to use it all you have to do is activate it. But if you have no existing credit history, it’s a good idea to occasionally buy something (like groceries or other things you need to buy anyway) on the card and pay it off immediately just to keep building that good history.

well i don’t know the layout of your residence – but you need to monitor every first floor opening (doors and windows) AND any opening on any other floor accessible without the use of a ladder longer then 8 feet or so. I doubt 4 contacts will do that in any residence (i could be wrong – it depends on your situation) – i think that’s where the ‘add-ons’ comes in.
I would go with ADT – they usually have the top of the line hardware and their monitoring is top-notch.
I had several estimates when getting my system installed – no one offered the hardware free – if they do offer it free – it probably comes with a clause that you have to go with their monitoring for so many years and it will probably be more expensive in the long run considering all of the discounts you’re getting

I have been getting mail with my son’s name on it for credit cards, junk mail, and today was something from “sell your gold”…How do these places obtain names to send crap to? My son hasn’t applied for anything. What does this mean?

Thanks all. I asked him about it today and told him what was in the mail. He said the only thing it could be was some questionaire thing on the internet of course to get extra “AP” for this game 12th Sky he plays. So needless to say, we sat down and had a long talk..and he knows not to ever give his name and address out to anyone. He doesn’t know his ss#, so luckily he didn’t give that out! Whew. I was afraid that maybe his father(not in the picture and is a criminal) who somehow got ahold to his ss# may have been doing something, but when I found out he had it, I put a flag on my son’s ss# a few years ago just in case.
He might have given out his information on the internet or signed up with a site and stated that he was older than he was. If this is the case then these companies sell their information to other companies.
