In the last decade rating-based models have become very popular in credit risk management. These systems use the rating of a company as the decisive variable to evaluate the default risk of a bond or loan. The popularity is due to the straightforwardness of the approach, and to the upcoming new capital accord (Basel II), which allows banks to base their capital requirements on internal as well as external rating systems. Because of this, sophisticated credit risk models are being developed or demanded by banks to assess the risk of their credit portfolio better by recognizing the different underlying sources of risk. As a consequence, not only default probabilities for certain rating categories but also the probabilities of moving from one rating state to another are important issues in such models for risk management and pricing. It is widely accepted that rating migrations and default probabilities show significant variations through time due to macroeconomics conditions or the business cycle. These changes in migration behavior may have a substantial impact on the value-at-risk (VAR) of a credit portfolio or the prices of credit derivatives such as collateralized debt obligations (D+CDOs). In this book the authors develop a much more sophisticated analysis of migration behavior. How credit card lenders calculate monthly payments?
When I receive my credit card statement every month, it shows a minimum payment. I would like to know how the Lender gets that amount. I know my debt (PRINCIPAL), the interest rate (INTEREST) but I do not know the number of months (TERM) they use. Do they use the same payment formula that it is used to calculate mortgage payments?
If you take your full balance, and multiply that by 3 or 5% that’s how they do it. It used to be just 2% so that it would take really forever to pay it off (20 years) to pay it off. The government saw the trick and made them raise the % to be fairer to consumers. They do Not use the same formula to figure payments on your mortgage payment. You can search the internet for a amortization schedule and see easily how they do that.

In an effort to bring my overall debt down, I paid off my high interest Citibank credit card.
I have no need to use this card, HOWEVER … someone told me if I completely close out the account and discontinue the card … my credit rating will take a dive.
Its almost a damned if you do and damned if you don’t scenario.
Is this true? I already don’t have the greatest credit rating (I think credit ratings are the biggest scam on consumers) and am not sure what to do.
Should I completely close or keep going and pay the $60 dollar yearly fee just to keep it open?

You should never close a credit card account that is your oldest account (you loose credit history), or if it is the only credit card that you have with an available balance, as this will decrease your total available credit, raising your credit utilization.
If you have more credit cards that are building your credit rating, then close the account. I would not pay a annual fee if I did not have to.
If not I believe that Citibank sent letters out that if make purchase’s of more than $2400.00 a year they will waive the annual fee. Use the card each month for your groceries and gas, and pay it off in full each month, you should reach the $2400.00 in a year and avoid the fee. .

Many observers considered the financial turmoil was behind us because major advanced countries had adopted stimulus packages to prevent banks from going bankrupt. However, there are rising doubts about the creditworthiness of several advanced countries that participated in the bailouts. In this uncertain context, it is particularly crucial to be knowledgeable about sovereign ratings. This book provides the necessary broad overview, which will be of interest to both economists and investors alike. Chapter 1 presents the main issues that are addressed in this book. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 provide the key notions to understand sovereign ratings. Chapter 2 presents an overview of sovereign rating activity since the first such ratings were assigned in 1918. Chapter 3 analyzes the meaning of sovereign ratings and the significance of rating scales; it also describes the refinement of credit rating policies and tools.
