In 1770, tavernkeeper Abigail Stoneman called in her debts by flourishing a handful of playing cards before the Rhode Island Court of Common Pleas. Scrawled on the cards were the IOUs of drinkers whose links to Stoneman testified to women`s paradoxical place in the urban economy of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Stoneman did traditional women`s work—boarding, feeding, cleaning, and selling alcohol—but her customers, like her creditors, underscore her connections to an expansive commercial society. These connections are central to The Ties That Buy.Historian Ellen Hartigan-O`Connor traces the lives of urban women in early America to reveal how they used the ties of residence, work, credit, and money to shape consumer culture at a time when the politics of the marketplace was gaining national significance. Covering the period 1750-1820, the book analyzes how women such as Stoneman used and were used by shifting forms of credit and cash in an economy transitioning between neighborly exchanges and investment-oriented transactions. In this world, commerce reached into every part of life. At the hearths of multifamily homes, renters, lodgers, and recent acquaintances lived together and struck financial deals for survival. Landladies, enslaved washerwomen, shopkeepers, and hucksters sustained themselves by serving the mobile population. A new economic practice in America—shopping—mobilized hierarchical and friendly relationships into wide-ranging consumer networks that depended on these same market connections.Rhetoric emerging after the Revolution downplayed the significance of expanding female economic life in the interest of stabilizing the political order. But women were quintessential market participants, with fluid occupational identities, cross-class social and economic connections, and a firm investment in cash and commercial goods for power and meaning.

** COMPLETELY UNAUTHORIZED ** Trekkies and Trekkers alike will get starry-eyed over this eclectic mix of essays on the groundbreaking original Star Trek series. Star Trek writers D. C. Fontana and David Gerrold, science fiction authors, such as Howard Weinstein, and various academics share behind-the-scenes anecdotes, discuss the show`s enduring appeal and influence, and examine some of the classic features of the show, including Spock`s irrationality, Scotty`s pessimism, and the lack of seatbelts on the Enterprise. The impact of Star Trek on subsequent science-fiction television programs is explored, as well as how the show laid the foundation for the science fiction genre to break into the television medium.
Should we pay children to read books or to get good grades? Should we put a price on human life to decide how much pollution to allow? Is it ethical to pay people to test risky new drugs or to donate their organs? What about hiring mercenaries to fight our wars, outsourcing inmates to forprofit prisons, auctioning admission to elite universities, or selling citizenship to immigrants willing to pay? In What Money Can’t Buy, Michael J. Sandel takes up one of the biggest ethical questions of our time: Isn’t there something wrong with a world in which everything is for sale? If so, how can we prevent market values from reaching into spheres of life where they don’t belong? What are the moral limits of markets? In recent decades, market values have crowded out nonmarket norms in almost every aspect of life—medicine, education, government, law, art, sports, even family life and personal relations. Without quite realizing it, Sandel argues, we have drifted from having a market economy to being a market society. In Justice, an international bestseller, Sandel showed himself to be a master at illuminating, with clarity and verve, the hard moral questions we confront in our everyday lives. Now, in What Money Can’t Buy, he provokes a debate that’s been missing in our market-driven age: What is the proper role of markets in a democratic society, and how can we protect the moral and civic goods that markets do not honor and money cannot buy?
Where is the credit to engineers for advancing medical technology?
The advancements in medicine are because of engineers, not doctors. Doctors just sit there with their clipboard and mirror on their forehead and tell you to cough and then give you medicine. Big whoop.
haha, I’m in school to become a biomedical engineering. I think usually when research is being done there is a collaboration between several different kinds of engineers, maybe some chemists (or chem engineers), and doctors.
I think that there is not enough credit to scientists in general.

This volume presents a variety of approaches to credit-bearing information literacy courses used from the community college to the university level. Many librarians still favor a course-integrated model, but one way to get the best results of either approach is to offer discipline specific courses, the features of which are described in this collection. Other subjects covered include the use of newer technologies like blogs or wikis or making use of video gaming and conferencing. The volume is edited by Hollister, an associate librarian at the University of Buffalo and an adjunct instructor in the Department of Library and Information Studies. No index has been provided. The subprime mortgage loan crisis in the US has developed into a broad credit and credit derivatives crisis lately. In previous years the credit derivatives market experienced growth rates of over 100% per year, outpacing all other derivative segments. This highlights the tremendous demand for credit derivatives, which is likely to remain high despite the current turmoil, but also shows how vulnerable markets have become with respect to this asset class. Consequently, a comprehensive understanding of the risks and mechanisms of the market is essential. Market participants who neglect this necessity face large downside risks, while those who have adequate and efficient risk management processes in place will be rewarded with an attractive risk return profile. This book aims at providing a reference guide to the credit and credit derivatives universe. It covers topics ranging from basic valuation principles for plain-vanilla products to insights into the latest development in sophisticated structured credit products. The authors explain in detail, but always with a hands-on practical perspective, all relevant instruments and quantitative valuation techniques. They show how these instruments can be integrated in a portfolio context and how efficient portfolio management is implemented. Moreover, the authors show how to develop and implement trading and investment strategies in the credit market.

I’ve defaulted on 4 of my credit cards from 2007 and finally paid them off(December 2010)

Start small with a secured Visa card. Or, purchase (on-credit) a small item (less than $200) from a jewelry store that reports to the credit bureaus. Explain your situation to them, that you are trying to rebuild your credit. They will likely oblige (and approve you), if it’s a low ticket item and not a Rolex.
Pay either of those on time.
Whatever remaining accounts you have (if any) MUST be paid on time.
Learn from your past mistakes.
In time, a long time….your score will start to improve.

It is common to blame the inadequacy of credit risk models for the fact that the financial crisis has caught many market participants by surprise. On closer inspection, though, it often appears that market participants failed to understand or to use the models correctly. The recent events therefore do not invalidate traditional credit risk modeling as described in the first edition of the book. A second edition is timely, however, because the first dealt relatively briefly with instruments featuring prominently in the crisis (CDSs and CDOs). In addition to expanding the coverage of these instruments, the book will focus on modeling aspects which were of particular relevance in the financial crisis (e.g. estimation error) and demonstrate the usefulness of credit risk modelling through case studies. This book provides practitioners and students with an intuitive, hands-on introduction to modern credit risk modelling. Every chapter starts with an explanation of the methodology and then the authors take the reader step by step through the implementation of the methods in Excel and VBA. They focus specifically on risk management issues and cover default probability estimation (scoring, structural models, and transition matrices), correlation and portfolio analysis, validation, as well as credit default swaps and structured finance. Contents (updates and changes in bold) 1. Estimating Credit Scores with Logit Additional section on credit scoring in the mortgage market and its role in the development of the subprime crisis 2.
