What is the difference between using cash or credit on a debit card?

If I make a purchase with my debit card, and the clerk asks “Cash or Credit“, what is the difference. From what I’m aware of, cash takes the money directly from my account, while credit allows me a few days to actually put the money in my account. Is this correct???

You mean “credit or debit”.

They both come immediately out of your bank or credit account as a pending transaction. There is no ‘float’. You’ll be hit with an overdraft (debit) or over limit (credit) fee as soon as the transaction is entered. The merchant pays about 1.5% of the purchase as a ‘tax’ to the bank for debit card transactions, about 2.5% for credit card purchases.
